Haiku

A participatory public art project October 2023, Haiku was designed by Chris Speyer  and created with members of the community in Cullompton, Devon. It formed part of 'Creative Cullompton' - a High Street Action Zone programme with funding from Historic England. The finished artwork was installed in the courtyard of the The Hayridge Centre.

After a walk through parkland along the old millstream, participants wrote words that reflected their memories of the sights sounds and smells they had experienced. These they then rearranged to create haikus.

Stoneware stained with oxides was used to create the Haiku sculpture.

Participants modelled small 'sprig' decorations to illustrate the haikus that they had written.

The 'sprigs' were bisque fired and then used to form impressed and raised decorations on the spines of the sculpture.

The words of the haikus written by the participants were stamped into the clay spines, punctuated by sprig decorations.
